a chocolate cake for Easter
I’ve never been much into celebrating events with cake. If someone brought one for a birthday, great, but I didn’t arrange it. I focused on food, food and more good food. And drinks. And good company of course.
During my first few years here the sudden change – the heat, the stress of not speaking the language, and spending so much time in the provinces – made me crave familiarity on occasion. My comfort food became brownies and chocolate cakes. I dragged friends on “dessert crawls”. But the selections were subpar, even coming out of the bakeries of Raffles, Cambodiana etc. Baking was out of the question. Few people had ovens, or had ovens AND an air conditioned home (you had to be creative to bake here). Baking supplies and products weren’t easily available, and besides I was more into consumption not production. I came to appreciate a good dessert, and particularly a beautifully decorated cake for special occasions.
Now with Tristan having just learned how to blow, so that he can blow out lit candles, I suddenly find the whole pretty cake business very interesting. Might have to polish up some baking and decorating skills (or find out where to get a good one!).
